Not me, but my Dad suffered from it for years. It's sad, but a lot of people won't accept how serious it can be because they can't see it like a physical illness. It's very real though.

I'm a firm believer that depression happens for a reason. Find out what brought it on and work on it from that angle. I intellectualized my depression when I had it....traced it back to several root causes and then handled it that way.
No one is a victim of depression. It has a cause, much like a flu, or a separated shoulder. Find the cause and repair. If it's hormonal, or chemistry related, last case scenario, medicate.....but absolutely the last case scenario. If you're suicidal, do whatever it takes to prevent that outcome.
Everyone I know who has ever battled depression has come out on the winning end of it. Remember, it's temporary and not a life sentence.
